The city of Terre Haute on the Wabash River in Indiana traced its early growth as a port for river trade. It then developed into an industrial town with thriving iron and steel mills. The eventual decline in industry following World War II and a perceived lack of culture gave Terre Haute a negative reputation, until a revitalization effort earned it the 2010 Community of the Year award from the Indiana Chamber of Commerce.
